This is the region where you’re almost sure of seeing a white rhino as most of them occur here. On the whole, there is more game purported to exist in the southern part of the park. The combretum woodlands, also part of this region, attract reasonable herds of kudu, impala, giraffe, buffalo, zebra, white rhino and elephant, and the scarcity of lion in this part of the park, makes way for the cheetah and wild dog.
The Southern region bound by the Sabie River in the north, and the Crocodile River in the south plays host to the Lebombo Mountains along the border with Mozambique of which Khandzalive is the highest point in the park. In the valleys visitors will find Cape chestnut, coral and lavender fever-berry trees rarely found in other sections of the Park. The Southern area have many distinctive koppies (small hills) made from granite, surrounded by rock fig trees, which are home small buck species, baboon, dassies and leopard.
