Nestled at the base of the Drakensberg escarpment, behind the Three Rondawels, Moholoholo has become a haven for the rehabilitation and care of abandoned, injured and poisoned wildlife. Wildlife is brought to the Centre from all corners of South Africa, and once healthy enough are re-introduced into their natural environment.
There are however some species that cannot be returned to the wild due to the nature and extent of their injuries stand no chance of survival in the wild are cared for at the center and used in educational tours.
The Centre is open to the public twice a day, Monday to Saturday. Sunday tours are only held at 15h00, over long weekends or during the school holidays. The tours start at 09h30 and 15h00 and last approximately 2 hours. There is also a tea garden at the Centre.
Another important function of the center is breeding with Moholoholo having bred and released the endangered Crowned Eagle, Serval (with over 150 of which have been bred and released back into areas where they have previously become extinct) and many others into the wild.
Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre was started in 1992 on a Game Farm owned by a wildlife enthusiast Mr. J.A. Strydom when Brian Jones the manager had a Crowned Eagle when he arrived and was then brought in a day old Zebra From thereon word got out that Brian was able to care and release animals and birds…and so the Rehab Centre started.
The rehab now houses confiscated Lions from a Mozambique Circus, a lioness caught in a snare, Chui the leopard, Porsche the cheetah, Caracal, Serval, Cheetah, Crowned Eagle, Marshall Eagle, Vultures and many more that have been confiscated, orphaned, abandoned or injured.
